Staff Show & Tell: DIY Rainbow Sprinkles
by Francesca Long, marketing supervisor
In honor of Pride Month, Francesca, who you might have met behind the front desk at Madison Children’s Museum, shows us how to make our own amazing rainbow sprinkles!

These vegan sprinkles are a fun and creative way to celebrate Pride Month and add a little rainbow to anything you can imagine! Use them on cakes, cookies, ice cream, or on their own. Be creative with your colors, you can make any color of the rainbow!
You will need:
- 1 cup of powdered sugar
- ½ teaspoon of cream of tartar
- ¼ teaspoon of vanilla (you can use less or more depending on your preference)
- 2-4 teaspoons of warm water (enough to make a smooth, shiny paste that’s soft but not too runny)
- Food coloring of choice

How to make the sprinkles:
Mix all your ingredients together, adding water a teaspoon at a time until you get a smooth mixture that isn’t too runny (if it is too runny, it won’t hold its shape and will be hard to pipe).
Divide your mix into as many small bowls as you want: you’ll want one bowl for each color! Add food coloring to each bowl and mix to get your chosen color. Play around with color combinations! Can you make all the colors of the rainbow just using red, yellow, and blue?
Place your colored icing into a piping bag or a sandwich bag and snip off a very small corner. Thinner lines and dots will dry much better and allow for crispier sprinkles instead of gooey ones.
Pipe lines or dots onto cookie sheets lined with baking parchment and leave to dry overnight. Make sure to cover them you have any overly inquisitive family members like the one pictured here!
The next day, roll up the baking paper to break up the lines and free the dots from the paper and there you go: rainbow sprinkles! Keep the baking parchment as it can be reused for future sprinkle creations! You’ll notice some of the dye may be left on the paper making it even more fun and colorful!
This is a fun recipe to do with the help of grownups. Little hands can help with color mixing, piping (if able), breaking up the sprinkles the next day, and of course, enjoying them!

We adapted this recipe from one originally found on Heart of a Baker.
