Brain Builders: Climbing Robots
by Heather Davis, MCM Early Learning Manager

Here’s another fun game to make with supplies you have at home!

List of supplies:
- Piece of card stock
- Marker
- Scissors
- String
- Tape
- A straw
Directions:
- First, we made a list of things that fly and took turns writing.

2. Next, we decided which flying item to make. You could choose anything: rocket ship, helicopter, bumble bee, etc. We chose to make a robot.

3. Cut out your creation.

4. Turn your creation over so the backside faces up. Cut your drinking straw making two 1-1.5 inch pieces. Tape the pieces to the back, making sure the tops and bottoms of the straw are clear.
5. Take a length of string (maybe start with 6 feet) and thread each end through the straws. Tie a bead (or make a ball out of foil) on each string.

6. Tape the string to a door or wall. Grab the beads and pull to the SIDES. You’ll see your robot or rocket climb to the sky!

Pro tip: children (especially young ones) will want to pull back on the string, pulling it off the wall. The trick is to pull the strings apart and to the sides.
After making the robot we were inspired to make other items like a rocket ship, using more straws as the fire. What will you make?
