Madison Girl Scouts Explore More Badges with MCM

Girl Scouts workshops for badges restart in late January and early February, 2013.

Since the Madison Children’s Museum opened in 1991, Girl Scouts from the Dane County area have been attending “scout-only” workshops at the museum to earn new badges.

Junior, Brownie, and Daisy Girl Scouts attend half-day classes to receive badges like Making Friends, Scribe, and Gardener. Workshops are geared toward cultivating and teaching appreciation for nature, friends and family, reading and writing, and creativity.

Just a few weekends ago, Junior-level scouts worked toward their Scribe badge by exploring the written word in three different activities. Late this month, Brownies earned more badges as they joined senior citizens from the SPARK! program that aims to connect people with memory loss to younger generations. The 12 brownies created and shared unique and collaborative stories with elders in the community for their Making Friends Badge.

In 2013, girl scouts of different levels will get their chance to earn various badges including, Inventor, Use Resources Wisely, My Family Story, Pets, Playing in the Past, Social Butterfly, Celebrate Community, Courageous and Strong, Project Designer, and gardener.

After each workshop, troops may stay after with their chaperone to explore the museum. Any troop is welcome to participate in the workshops and the museum takes one to six troops during each badge earning class. The museum is looking into offering boy scout programs in the upcoming year. So stay posted!
