Beyond Red, White, and Blue

July is for more than just red, white, and blue.

Colorful shaving cream swirls

This month we have several colorful (and we mean that literally) programs coming up soon which will inspire the artistic spirit in kids of many ages.

Natural Dyes, Saturday, July 15, 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Learn about plant uses and dyes made from plant material and paint designs on cotton fabric. For all ages. Located in the Rooftop Ramble.

Garden Colors, Wednesday, July 19, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Make a flower press and explore the various colors in the garden on a scavenger hunt. For ages 1 and up. Located in the Rooftop Ramble.

Shaving Cream Colors, Saturday, July 23, 1 – 3 p.m.
Come make prints using the food coloring and hydrophobic properties of shaving cream! For all ages.  In the Art Studio.

We know that making art is about far more than decoration.  Encouraging artistic skills in kids is part of promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) – with the understanding that fostering art and creativity is vital for creating the innovations of tomorrow. Inspiring kids to take color beyond selecting a crayon out of a box helps them develop a more nuanced eye, and deeper appreciation for the colorful world around them.

Color is also an essential part of the aesthetic of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose work and inspiration is the focus of our newest exhibit, From Coops to Cathedrals: Nature, Childhood, and the Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.  He even developed his own color palette, which is on display in the studio section of the exhibit.  Just like the famous architect, our programs encourage kids to be inspired by the colors of plants and animals in the natural world.

Best of all, all of three of these events are part of our daily programs that are free with admission to the museum, with no preregistration required.  Check out our event calendar for a list of all of our free programs for kids, and come get colorful with us!
