A report from Washington, D.C.

Last night in the ornate Cannon Caucus Room on Capitol Hill, I had the honor of joining Visitor Services Associate Ben Perreth in accepting the National Medal for Museum and Library Service on behalf of Madison Children’s Museum. Author and journalist Cokie Roberts presented the medals after reflecting on the personal difference museums and libraries had made in her own life, starting with the story of negotiating her first library card at age 5, even though the rules said you had to be 6. In her remarks, she specifically mentioned Ben’s story of how our museum had positively changed his life and given him purpose despite physical and emotional challenges.

Ten museums and libraries received the award, and MCM was the very last. As Ben and I rose to receive the medal, a cheer went up from crowd and Ben’s mother beamed with pride. We head to the White House for a tour this morning, and Ben is on the lookout for the President and First Lady, but is equally excited to meet the First Dog. We’re honored to represent all of Madison here in D.C., and pass on the many good wishes and congratulations we’ve received!
