On the first open Wednesday night of each month, MCM invites our entire community to enjoy the museum for free. Free Family Night is a great time for first time visitors to enjoy the museum, and is a popular time for older children to return to visit their favorite exhibits.

This month we’re opening a brand new feature in our Windows to the Past exhibit, an old-timey Wisconsin dairy bar! Dairy bars have a delicious history in Madison, which you can learn about while you serve up pretend ice cream. To celebrate this new exhibit, our friends at Chocolate Shoppe have donated some REAL ice cream which we’ll be giving out free while supplies last.

Join Art Studio resident ceramics artist Kelsey for a collaborative project to create ceramic art for a Madison Children’s Museum art installation. Learn more…

The evening will also feature a special performance by the KIOJA Step Team! Kioja was started September 19, 2009 by Richard Scott who was then the minority service coordinator at East High School, 2005 alumna Faith Stevenson and Teresa Stevenson. The word is pronounced as KEE-O-JAH. In Swahili kioja means “Miracle.” The group is composed of eight Madison East High School girls from different backgrounds who share an interest in stepping and building lasting friendships. Since its start in 2009 it has evolved into more than just a step team, Kioja has become a high school sorority that places emphasis on growth, community service and sisterhood.

Free Family Night is an Access for Everyone program. The developmental benefits of play are critical to every child’s growth and the museum’s access programs ensure that all children and families are equipped with critical resources to succeed.
